The Nerd Herd Game

Ken Whitaker’s live workshops needed a better way to test attendees on what they learned during team exercises. We couldn’t find any off-the-shelf team quiz tools that could be easily configured without the services of a costly consulting engagement.

So, we’ve created our own customizable gamification solution!

Pick a card, any card

No wonder blended learning courseware incorporates game play (gamification) as a creative way to ensure retention of material. The Nerd Herd Game is a unique blend of traditional board games and software technology. Most of all, it is fun!

A collaboration game with infinite possibilities™

  • How the game is played

    As a collaboration game, participants break into four teams. The NHG is both traditional (board game) and non-traditional (customizable with an app). In the figure below, two players are designated per team.

  • A board game

    The Nerd Herd Game consists of a playing card deck, game pieces, and two game boards (a simple board game for fast, under one hour play and the other that offers a little more challenging).

    The design of the game is based on grouping into teams to encourage collaboration and spirited competition. The physical game board, cards, and game pieces heighten game play instead of just a computerized game experience.

  • An app

    The Nerd Herd Game app gives you the ability to create your own game topics. When a playing card is selected from the deck, the app brings up the next question to ask (or task the team has to perform) from a game set database.

    If the team responds with the correct outcome, they move their game piece forward. The first team to reach D-U-N-N in the center of the game board wins! Because the game set is a database, you can create your own questions and tasks.

    The Nerd Herd Game doesn’t have to be “all business” either. If you are hosting an extended family birthday bash or planning a high school reunion, turn embarrassing situations and memories into a unique game experience.

  • Professional edition

    DESIGNED FOR TEAM LEARNING

    If you are a consultant, use The NHG to test your client’s knowledge after an onsite engagement or workshop. Human resources will love the ease of putting together games to test employees understand of organizational change. If you have a chain of espresso houses, The NHG could test new baristas with their understanding of pulling shots, handling customers, and coffee knowledge.

We will launch a crowdfunding campaign expected in 2025 to coincide with the release of The Art of Technical Project Management blended learning course. To engage students with the contents of the textbook, a special game set will be available specifically for this course.
